What turns a good gift idea into that really special gift that will stand out from the crowd?

by Ron Thomson

There is one question however that we need to ask before we start.

How many weddings have you been to where the same marriage gift has been given by at least two guests?

I remember one wedding I went to where the bride had been given three toasters (two of them were part of matching sets with other kitchen equipment). Yes there was some laughter and some humour to cover up the embarrassment but also some disappointment as well. Who decides which gift is returned to the store (if bought locally) or which gift is put away to await a breakage of the first one being used. The wedding day is meant to be a really special day in someone's life! Would it right to put them through that extra embarrassment and trouble?

Perhaps to prevent this happening with our gift maybe we look at it in a different way?

Do we need to think about makes a truly unique gift that will really mean something?

If the person really is someone special to you than you need to suggest that you have gone to some trouble trying to track down just the right gift idea. This would mean not getting something available in every department store in town as that is where everyone else is looking as well.

A personalized gift idea will cause someone to think about you with fond memories whenever they see it or use it.

It should be something they can talk about with pride and how their 'special friend' took the time and trouble to find the unique personalized gift just for them and them alone.

There are a lot of unique gift ideas on the market but we need to ask some questions.

* Can you really say the gift you are about to buy someone is truly unique? * Would someone automatically think you had gone to some trouble to find something different to everyone else? * Is it personalized in some way to say that it was bought for that person alone rather than a unwanted gift being reused? * Will the gift last longer than a bouquet of flowers or the bottle of wine that is here today and gone tomorrow? * Is it something that even the person who seems to have everything doesn't have?

If you go through the above list can you still say that your unique gift idea is unique enough to know that it will not be duplicated?
