Wedding Gift Card
![]() |
For years giving money for wedding presents just wasn’t done unless you were family. Friends did not give money unless it was an ethnic tradition. In the South where I live, this was a no no, Cash was simply not any option. It was considered crass or tacky. Now the bride and groom probably would have been much happier with money than three toasters but that wasn’t taken into consideration on this etiquette rule. No money.
Now times have changed. Checks are acceptable but still seem a little lazy. The wedding gift card has solved this problem completely. You look as though you did expend a bit of effort. You went to a store and purchased the card. The bride and groom are very happy to receive such a useful gift. Newlyweds need everything especially if they are moving into a new house. One of my favorite gift cards comes from Wal Mart. You can buy anything from tires, to clothes, to household items, to groceries at Wal Mart. It is your one stop shopping place. If they get enough Wal Mart gift cards, they might even be able to buy a television or some other technological equipment. See; everyone’s happy.
Because so few stores carry all of a bride’s china. Obviously, the bride wouldn’t have chosen the china if she didn’t want a full set. If a person doesn’t find the china and passes on the gift, the bride won’t get the china she wants. Instead of getting something else, just buy a department store gift card where the bride can order her china. Again everyone’s happy.
Now Visa and Mastercard make gift card giving quite easy. Buy a card for a certain amount, put the card in a nice card, and you are good to go. These cards are readily available and the bride and groom can use them almost anywhere. The couple can even use them on their honeymoon if they run short of money. Gift cards are suck a great idea for wedding gifts.
For the technology savvy bride and groom gift cards are particularly great. They can use the cards online to purchase almost anything. After the wedding and honeymoon, the couple can see what they still need and use their handy dandy wedding gift cards to buy what they need.
When you write thank-you notes for gift cards or checks, you really should write the money amount on the card. Instead you should thank the sender for the generous check or the wonderfully generous gift card. Mentioning money is still a little crass.
A good rule of thumb is to keep the gift cards in a safe place. Don’t pass them around at showers because people don’t really need to know how much the card is for. Besides if several people give cards, the low giver might get embarrassed. Don’t lose the cards; remember they are the same as money. If they are lost, you are out of luck. There are no replacements.
When it’s time to spend the gift cards, you might look at your gift registry to see what you wanted but didn’t receive. Decide together what you still want and use the cards to purchase those items. Don’t fight over the cards. Remember; they are for the happy couple. Spend them like the happy couple you are.
