Wedding Gifts - How Much to Spend?

There is no set amount anyone should spend on a wedding gift. Most people would say that they spend according to their relationship with the couple getting married. That’s probably the best rule of thumb; spend according to the relationship.

If the engaged couple is family, the amount to be spent depends on the closeness of the family member and a person’s budget. Obviously, no matter how close a person is to the soon-to-be married couple, if you don’t have much money, you shouldn’t go into debt to buy a present. If your budget is small, use your shopping smarts to help you purchase a nice gift. You can create a lovely gift basket with little money. Buy a nice basket and then go to a Dollar Store and buy items that every new couple needs but probably won’t receive as presents. Items like dishwashing brushes, oven mitts, and dish clothes. This present will be much appreciated and you won’t have overspent your budget.

If the engaged couple is close family and you have plenty of money, you will want to give them a very nice gift. If the couple is also going to be new homeowners, you might want to buy them lawn equipment or even a new piece of furniture. If other members of the family aren’t as wealthy and you are afraid of everyone thinking you are grandstanding, you might buy a nice gift and then give them the large purchase later. Anyway, let your best intentions be your guide. Give what you can afford and with love; the couple with be thrilled.

If you are in the wedding party, obviously you are a close friend. Generally, this means a nice wedding gift or several gifts if you are invited to several showers. If you are invited to showers, you might buy a set of gifts and give a part of the set at each shower. For instance, if you buy a set of cookware which includes seven pieces, you can wrap them individually and you are set for the showers. If you are good with crafts, you could make the couple a wedding gift or gifts. For instance, every young couple needs accessories for their new place. You could find out their color scheme and make pillows for their new bedroom or sofa. These pillows can be made for little or no money. Your talent is the best gift.

If you work in an office, you are bound to be invited to many weddings even when you barely know one member of the happy couple. In these cases, you should try if possible to join with several other people in the office and give a group gift. This way the couple gets a nice gift and no one spends much money. If the office worker is a good friend, you will want to give them gifts commiserate with your friendship. Again, don’t go overboard. You may want to check the gift registry for ideas. Gift registries are wonderful ways to buy the perfect gift. The couple gets what they want and you don’t have to stress over the gift.

The best way to decide how much to spend on a wedding present is to check your budget and your relationship with the couple It is never wise to overspend or try to make a big impression by a buying an extravagant gift.
